This post is all about food. Home cooked food with TLC (Tender Loving Care). You have been warned not to read on an empty stomach, and full stomach (it doesn’t make sense lol). XD
Was hanging out at ping.sg shoutbox, when we all start talking about food… DK was thinking what to ta bao (packet) for dinner, while eastcoastlife (ecl) was talking about what she cooked for dinner… and that got me started on my dad’s cooking… hee… so here goes this entry… Dad loves to cook, and everyone who tasted his cooking likes it very much… Hendri can vouch for that too… hee
So here it is…
Honestly, I miss home cooked food.. I enjoy home cooked food alot… and yes, i always look forward to meals at home XD.. cos no MSG, less salty and healthier than outside food. Dad seldom follow recipes, instead he modifies the recipes according to his liking, and I would say that the end result is much nicer than the ones specified in the recipe lol…
Carrot cake, the type sold at hawker center, contains very little radish, but plenty of flour… but not the homemade version… It contains plenty of radish, shredded nicely and complemented with the wax sausage, mushroom and dried shrimps… mixed into a carefully prepared flour mixture and steam for 1 hour… and voila, nice tray of tasty carrot cake… and its good to be eaten on its own or cut into pieces and fry.. crispy man… oooh, i can hear my stomach growling at the thought of it… hehe… Similarly, the yam cake he makes contain so much yam, and u can really still taste the bits of yam inside it… Dried shrimps are also added to it, making it smell so much nicer… The vegetarian version is just simply omit all the other ingredients… hahaha…
OOOh… boiled soups… hehe… from there, ecl guessed that i am a Cantonese… yup… for Cantonese pple love their soups alot, and I am no exception… hee… Dad makes good soups too… He can make bak ku teh, with loads of pepper and spices, complete with the meat… oooh, end result is soup which provides a lot of kick and the meat? tender and juicy, right down to the bone… and oh, i can easily drink 2 bowls of it…Other soups like bitter-gourd soup, double boiled herbal chicken soup – with all the goodness of fresh chicken and herbs, ginseng chicken soup, hee, and not forgetting other soups like the “gou ke choi” (wolfberry leaves soup) *the red thing that is good for the eyes, just that we eat the leaves as well), cooked with salted egg and century egg, taste heavenly (how i miss that soup).
Heard of sharks fin melon? The flesh looks exactly like sharks fin, and when made to soup (again!) haha, it taste like the real thing, a bit plain, but season it with pepper, as well as beat in an egg, make it a bit thicker and there you have it, the real mc coy. Throw in a dash of carrot and it looks so pretty already! even the humble corn soup can be flavoured by adding in garlic and cabbage, along with carrots and boil, it taste oh so sweet! and yup, dumpling soup~ hand made dumplings cooked into a lovely bowl of “shui gao tong” (cantonese for dumpling soup). hee…
This is the first part of describing what my dad cooks… If you all readers like it, do let me know and I will continue to blog about it
