Gotten the Nokia N97 less than a month ago, during a lucky draw at the Nokia Christmas’09 Party, and its thanks to Nokia, Text100 for the lovely invite to the Pierside, One Fullerton.

The phone functioned very well, till 31st December 2009, Eve of the new year. It literally died on me, on my way to dinner. I was relying heavily on Google Maps to guide myself to Dempsey Road, when the phone froze and refused to start up after that. I’m pretty much horrified. Because I didn’t carry a spare phone with me, I have no way of contacting my friends.

Big thanks to Neo for lending me his spare phone to tie me through the ordeal (can’t think of a better word to describe this experience).

Decided to find a way to fix this White Screen of Death problem. To put it simply, White Screen of Death (WSOD) is basically having your Nokia phone having a white screen and nothing happens after that.

What I am going to share here, is a simple tip to recover your phone from WSOD. I tried it, and it worked, else I won’t be sharing it here with you Chanced upon the solution at Nokia’s Support Discussion Forum

So here are the steps to revive your bricked phone:

press and hold”from the full kaypad”: the backsapce key + space + caps lock

while holding these keys power on ur phone

keep holding until the time zone selection is appeared

It should work, and revive your WSOD-ed phone.

Oh yes, note that all your data and settings in the phone memory will be erased. But whatever’s saved in the Mass Memory or your external memory card, its safe. I checked it and all my photographs and downloaded apps are still safe.

Alrightey, may this tip come in handy if your Nokia Phone ever WSOD

Been hearing Justin mentioning all about Hackerspace, and yes, I am slow enough not to dig up and read up all about it. Personally, I feel that it would be really really cool for a place where ideas will hatch!

So, to do my part, I shall make this post a quick shout out for Hackerspace Singapore.

Taken from Justin’s post:

What is Hackerspace?

Hackerspace, in its fundamental essence, is a place for people who love to explore, experiment, tinker around, create, and innovate to come together, work on their cool ideas, and show it off. It is also a place where various communities can host their events, gather to discuss, and hang out after their events.

It would be lovely to have a place for Hackerspace Singapore to call $HOME to… where loads of cool stuff will happen.

What would be better than me just saying all this? Read the slideshow for more information.

And oh, if you have any ideas to hatch, feel free to head over to the Hackspace Singapore Wiki!

Personally, ideas are only improved when one receive feedback. You never know that there are like minded people out there

Alright, so much for this post on Hackerspace. I do hope you will be able to gain a better understanding about Hackerspace, as much as I did.

Get all that ideas down to paper, who knows, you might be the brainchild behind something great

Let me give you a brief recap of what was being used at the past code::XtremeApps:: 2007, 2008.

2007 was the year where the inaugural code::XtremeApps:: competition was launched, using Ruby on Rails (RoR) and Google Web Toolkit (GWT) to build mash-ups and applications. In 2008, IBM Project Zero and Adobe Air was used.

So… for this year’s competition, Python and Android will be used. Don’t worry, training will be provided. Check out the web page here I do encourage you to follow the instructions on the page, where technical specifications and software is concerned.

If you are game for the 24 hour code jamming challenge, join in the code::XtremeApps and put on your thinking caps.

Nicole

PS: I participated in the inaugural 24 hour code jam competition in 2007.

Manage to lay my hands on this lovely Lenovo Ideapad Y650. Thanks DK for letting me trying it out I’ve seen it at the Lenovo’s Bloggers Night (which I have not written about it, Oops). A quick plug about the review that DK has wrote… here.

I would say that the matt cover hit a very sweet spot with me, for it made the lenovo wordings stand out, and gives it a very classy finish. And the curves around the corners just add subtle elegance to the whole design. I like. To top it off, the orange trimmings around the Ideapad Y650 breaks the monotony of the Black surface.

With a whopping screen size of 16 inches, coupled with a Blu-ray drive, it’s no doubt that it’s meant to serve up some mean entertainment… coupled with JBL Speakers, as well as Dolby Surround Sound.

Gotta admit that the sound quality is great, and the screen’s display very crisp and nice graphics.

The Ideapad Y650 tends to heat up, and I would say that it’s perfectly normal to do so, even more so when one is utilizing heavily on the graphics, and multimedia.

But fear not… the little raised legs at the back of the Ideapad helps to dissipate the heat away, so as not to overheat the unit. What struck me was that the battery unit is quite small for such a huge machine.

The Ideapad series don’t come with a trackpoint, but all is not lost for trackpoint lovers… for there is a huge touch pad to make up for it.

The subtle tactile feel on it allows fine interactivity on it, and the same multi-touch function can be used on the Y650 as well as the S10. Though I lament the lack of control for multi-touch sensitivity…

The keyboard’s alright, but the layout of the keys towards the right made it even easier for me to make typo errors. It feels as if the whole keyboard has been squeezed. =X

Especially the Home, End, PgUp and PgDn buttons. Kudos to ease of volume controls… and the placement of the lovely speakers at each corner. It would have been great if the keyboard is shifted down slightly below the speakers. The layout as such meant that more room to rest the wrists, but I felt that my wrists were positioned in an awkward manner. It felt uncomfortable to type after a while.

The surroundings of the keyboard is glossy, but it ain’t as bad, for it don’t show up the fingerprints and such that quickly. Glad that the keyboard keys are matt. White and Orange combination makes it look very pretty though.

The Ideapad Y650 weighs in at approximately less than 2.5 kg, making it one of the lightest 16-inch laptops around. Not my kind of device for me to bring around on the move, but it makes a great entertaining gadget. Not to mention that big screens make designing work easier too.

My take on the Y650? I like it without a doubt, though it’s simply not possible for me to run around with a huge machine. Entertainment’s a punch on it, with the great sound quality, and of course, Blu-ray drive to unlock great content.

Apart from this Ideapad Y650, there is the 15 inch model the Y550, which is unfortunately not available in Singapore market, and the 14 inch model the Y450. Would love to lay my hands on the Ideapad Y450.
